“My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.”
Verse: John 15:12 (NIV)
I’m betting that at some point in your life, you have uttered the following sentence to a friend: “We should get together sometime!”
Then it never happens. You have such good intentions, but let’s face it—life gets in the way. You need to chauffeur your kids around town, your work deadline moves up, the water heater explodes and/or you come down with the flu. Next thing you know, another month has passed, and still haven’t made that connection.
I get it. Carving out time can be difficult in this fast, frenzied, frantic world. But that’s precisely what makes it so necessary. We only get 24 hours in a day. A portion of that time is reserved for sleeping and another for working or schooling, which only leaves a sliver to make those crucial connections. And they are vital. According to author Lydia Denworth, friendship is a matter of life and death.
“It is carried in our DNA, in how we’re wired,” writes Denworth in her book Friendship. “Social bonds have the power to shape the trajectories of our lives. And that means friendship is not a choice or a luxury; it’s a necessity that is critical in our ability to succeed and thrive.”
God understands this necessity, which is why he implores you to take it seriously. Once you contact a friend, you’ll likely feel a weight lifted from your shoulders, maybe even a renewed spring in your step. Friendships are an expression of God’s omnipresent love right here on Earth. So, reach out today. Step out in faith and reminisce.
